Peasants’ Plot Sustainable Farm |
What is a CSA?
CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture and is a way for people
to really know where their produce is coming from. Participating in a
CSA farm means becoming a shareholder, investing in seed and labor prior
to the growing season. Your investment pays off in the form of a regular
delivery of fresh vegetables starting June 2010 through the end of October
2010, 20 weeks.
Why Peasants’ Plot?
There are increasingly more and more sustainably-run CSA farms out there like ours and we are proud to be part of such a growing family. Peasants’ Plot may be a good choice for you because of our
dedication to organic farming,
drop-off location (in coolers),
share size and cost,
worker share option,
annual Low Down Hoe Down, or
proximity to the Kankakee state park.
Become a sharecropper!
What is your commitment?
Share cost: $300/year
Each member pays the above cost in full, signs the sign-up agreement and agrees to pick up their share before 12:00 pm on their chosen pick-up day.
This share is appropriate for one person with a mostly vegetarian diet or, as we’ve heard from members this year, two people with varied diets.
If you’d like to purchase a wooden harvest basket with shoulder strap,
add $30.00.
What is our commitment?
Each week we deliver 4-7 different types of vegetables, depending on the time of the season, harvested within 48 hours. The vegetables are:
salad mixes, lettuce, radishes, arugula, spinach, chard, kale, beets, broccoli, onions, carrots, potatoes, tomatoes, summer squashes, cucumbers, sweet and hot peppers, garlic, dill, chives, cilantro and basil.
We keep you updated on how your vegetables are growing in the field,
share recipes and cooking hints, and answer any questions you have about
the progress of each crop. We plan as best we can for contingencies
such as weather and pests.
To sign up, please print out and complete the sign-up form.
If you are paying by check, please send the form along with payment to:

PEASANTS’ PLOT WORKER SHARE PROGRAM
Your heartfelt labor of 8 hours every month during the growing season will earn you weekly bags of organic, freshly-picked staple vegetables. A bag of vegetables every week June- October! In the spring, an example of one weekly ration is: a head of red leaf lettuce, a bag of arugula, a bunch of cilantro, and a bunch of kale. Summer rations may include: 2-3 tomatoes, 3 peppers, a bag of salad greens, and a bunch of swiss chard.
We will be growing the vegetables already mentioned plus spinach, broccoli,
carrots, potatoes, summer squashes, beets, onions, cilantro, basil, and
dill.
ON-FARM OPTION
You commit to working two 4-hour days a month at the farm June - October.
This option requires proximity to the farm or willingness to commute.
It is preferable that you have a car. We are about an hour south of downtown
Chicago. Carpools can be explored if we have applications from a pair
of workers who are equally committed and have similar availabilities.
Labor will involve tending vegetables, pulling weeds and planting seeds
in beds at ground level. A workday may also involve intimacy with dirt,
sun, wind, rain and other natural phenomena. We have a creek that attracts
occasional birds and beavers. We have a dog that will jump on you. Just
a 5-minute drive away is the beautiful Kankakee state park. You are welcome
to camp at the farm.
MARKET HELP OPTION
You commit to working two 4-hour days a month at the market June - October.
This option is appropriate to those who love farmers’ markets, love
talking to people about food. You may be asked to make change without
a calculator.
